Actually this did happen in Maine in the 1967 Commisioner election. Wintlethorp edged out Stornton by just 16 votes and Stornton demanded a recount. Wintlethorp said "no way." It was agreed that the candidate who could catch the most crabs in half an hour would win. The victor was Stornton. You can read all about it at the Bentonton Library.
