Wow, I haven't set foot in Western Maine since the mid 60s, but Aunt Peggy e-mailed me to take a look at this board, and what memories:

:The Marsh Boys - Pretty Little Clamdigger Girl

I WAS the pretty little clamdigger girl! It was all so weird, 'cause I thought it was a total drag. When I was 14, my parents shipped me outta Manhattan to work at Uncle Jack's Clam Shack all summer long. (Well, he was MY uncle Jack, you would've just known it as Jack's Clam Shack.) I really hated it. I was missing all the action in the city (probably why my folks sent me out to the boondocks), and the clamdigging EVERY MORNING was the worst! I'd get all muddy and grubby, and those stinky clams would spit at me, and worst of all was when they'd open up and I'd see those disgusting, slimy things... ick! I've hated them ever since.

Aaaanyway, the only good thing about it, was these two cute boys barely any older than me started showing up and watching me, and then they would hang out and talk with me and even help dig. Their names were Brian and Tim, and I had no idea they were in a band, but one day they showed up with a couple of guitars and played THE SONG for me. I coulda died with embarrassment, but in a good way, y'know? They told me they just wrote it and it was going to be a record and they'd be stars and all, but I never believed that, 'cause you know how boys are -- they'll say anything.

So the end of summer rolled around, and it was so dramatic, we were packing my things in Uncle Jack's car to take me back to NYC and up rolls Brian on his blue Vespa with a present for me. You guessed it: the Marsh Boys single, Pretty Little Clamdigger Girl. I blushed red as a beet, lemme tell you, and Brian giving me the shyest l'il kiss on my cheek didn't help. That trip back home seemed more like a plane ride than a car. I was just flying!

But then a few months later I heard that they hired some MODEL to be "the clamdigger girl" for PR appearances and I was so angry and jealous, I frisbee'd the record out the window and tore up Brian's address. And then they never turned out to be stars anyway, and I just forgot about the whole thing, especially in another year when I started hanging out in the Village. But I hope they're doing alright, 'cause they really were sweet boys, and I'm sure the model thing wasn't their fault. And I'd LOOOVE to hear the song again.

Anna
